Derek drives a B8 Passat Variant. His wagon is equipped with the R-line package. His wagon is finished in a dark blue color (a shade that I have never seen on any other B8 platform). Derek himself admitted that he bought this car because of the rarely seen color. I like Derek. At the same time, I also envy Derek…

You see… I’ve always been a fan of B8 Passat Variant R-line. Those, who have been following Avantturous since the beginning, would know that I have a soft spot for Passat Variant starting from the B5 model. While I prefer a smaller size wagon for its “zippiness” (is that even a word?), I just can’t resist the sleek design of the B8 model; specifically, the side profile of it.

Anyhow, enough about me. Let’s talk about Derek’s B8… Sleeper is the route that Derek had decided to pursue with his VW. The wagon is almost equipped with FBO (Full Bolt On), sans downpipe. It’s lowered on a set of springs that provide enough ground clearance while providing better handling. Braking power up front has been upgraded with a set of AP Racing brakes with slotted rotors. Wheels were upgraded to a set of Volk Racing wheels in gunmetal finish and were wrapped in Goodyear tires. To finish off the exterior, Derek decided to opt for Maxton inspired ground effects all around. Overall, it’s a good-looking wagon!

Derek planned on getting the performance & handling department dialed-in soon. A set of coilovers and front & rear sway bars would make a nice addition to the B8 Variant. Upgrading to IS38 and a software would make Derek one happy man!

WHY A WAGON?

Wagon ownership in Singapore is a pretty rare sight. Mainly due to the level of popularity with SUVs and crossovers, and low sales volume on wagons. But for myself I have always wanted something unique. Something that has the characteristics of a sedan but not a shape of a sedan. Coupes and convertibles were out of the question as those weren’t as family friendly as a wagon.

Did you consider a different WAGON instead of this one?

I would if my pocket allows. But for now, a Passat Variant work just fine for me. No complaints, hopefully in the future an Audi RS4 would be good!

What was your original objective with your car and has that objective changed?

Passat Wagon is a model that I chance upon accidentally. My desire was to own a RS4 but budget wise it’s quite impossible in Singapore.

I didn’t know locally Volkswagens had station-wagons until I start to spot some nice wagons with the VW logo.

What style would you say best describes your car?

Sleeper, stock look.

Who assisted in the planning/building/modding of your car?

I was lucky to have known a bunch of car enthusiasts that are playing on the Passat platform. They are very willing to share their experiences and hoots for modifications. I am glad till date this group of enthusiasts are still at their best; always looking out for new mods to try. Shout out to #boscosiao and gang.

What do you feel makes your car unique/special in your eyes?

Sleeper-look but the heart of a Golf GTi.

What is your favorite part/feature/function of the car?

Ea888.3 ftw!

If you could pick one thing you aren’t satisfied with about your car, what would it be?

If 4motion was an available option in Singapore that would have been perfect!

What has been the biggest obstacle you’ve faced while building this car?

Street legal parts are hard to get especially when it comes to performance stuff like downpipe and exhaust.

What one word best describes your car?

Perfect!

What is your final goal with this car?

Hopefully I can bring this car to another stage of handling and performance.
